Study in Green

Study in Green

Richard and I had a disagreement over the posting of this image. Richard insisted that cat images are not in keeping with our company image of serving corporate clients and being business-like. My attitude is that many of our corporate friends have cats and enjoy fresh feline fotos. They probably take care of their pets before and after work and worry about them during the day.

Besides, this kitty is staring at you just like your boss would as he or she gives you your annual review. You can pretend that the arms are the support structure that your organization gives your boss. The “Study in Green” part is symbolic of the salary discussion you are about to engage in. Now, what were you about to say?

Symmetry

Sunday, July 16th, 2006 by Norma Nichols

In Photoshop, I separated out a design element from a concrete wall that I found in Chattanooga. I flipped a copy of the basic element horizontally to make the other side of the shape. To make a smoother and softer surface texture I used the Fantastic Machines- Paint Engine plugin.

From there, I rotated copies to create a base of 4 units, then rotated those?elements every 22.5 degrees. Changing the hues to red, yellow, and blue added to the complexity of the pattern. A blackground layer makes it stand out. Finally, I added a small glow for a finishing touch using the Alien Skin Eye Candy Gradient Glow plugin.

In the version below I used the Flaming Pear- Kyoto Color plugin to recalculate all the colors.

Red and Yellow Swirls

Thursday, June 22nd, 2006 by Norma Nichols

Red and Yellow Swirls

This image started with a digital photo of my sister’s hammock. Using Photoshop, I applied Alien Skin EyeCandy 4000’s Swirl filter and Fantastic Machines FM Tile Tools Blend Emboss filter to make the peaks and valleys more 3-dimensional. Finally, I added a 30% overlay of Reindeer Graphics Adaptive Equalization filter in "vivid light" layer mode to enhance the texture.

To make the graduated yellow border I first created a yellow background layer. Then I selected the swirled hammock image and feathered the edge by 20 pixels. This "ate into the edges." As a result, the yellow background layer shined through around the edges, creating a translucent border.

For those who don’t use Photoshop, I just hope you enjoy my work.

My Strong Richard

My Strong Richard

This is Richard climbing a 50 foot rope in Santa Monica, California. He commented that when he was in the Marine Corps in 1969, he could climb a 50 foot rope without using his feet. This was his attempt to see if he’s gotten any older. It seems that he has.

Spring Flowers

Spring Flowers

This is a test of a new border-making plugin for Photoshop. . . Since Nature rarely frames things, I felt?I had to step in and rectify the situation . . .

Octopus

Octopus

I made this spooky image at?the Georgia Aquarium, which is currently the world’s largest, located here in Atlanta. The reddish lighting effect is part of the living exhibit. The hundred thousand fish seem to be right at home. Especially interesting is the coral reef, which is destined to be the largest coral reef ever enclosed and grown outside the ocean itself.

Pine Cone Pattern

The original element I used in creating this repeat pattern was a clay pine cone garden ornament.

Peach Blossoms

Spring is beginning to arrive here in the Atlanta area! These peach blossoms are living on a tree in my back yard in Douglasville.

Inside the Georgia World Congress Center

World Congress Center

The Georgia World Congress Center is a grouping of three extremely large buildings used for conventions and events in downtown Atlanta. This scene is inside the lobby of Building C.

I enjoy the strong repeating diagonals in this image and the algorithmic structure of the buildings as well.

Reptilian Leaves

Reptilian Leaves

These very textured leaves remind me of a reptile. Nature seems to apply similar themes to a wide variety of subjects. Here, the leaf scales help the plant engage in the most efficient act of photosynthesis.

Scales also appear on fish and reptile skins, woody plants, pine cones and the outer coverings of various insects. Their role is often protection as well as flexibility. The last dragon we saw was covered with them.

I wouldn’t want to be left alone with this bird.

Calla Lilies

Calalily Flower

I photographed these calla lilies because I like their graceful curves. I’m instantly reminded of Georgia O’Keeffe and her monumental paintings of this subject.

Fuzzy Cactus

On February 10, 2006, I photographed these cacti at the Southeastern Flower Show inside the World Congress Center here in Atlanta. It was a very photographer-friendly event so expect to see more plant and flower photos in the near future . . .
